Effect of Aging on Malate Dehydrogenase, Cytochrome c Oxidase Activities and RCR in Rat Liver Mitochondria

Abstract
Malate dehydrogenase, cytochrome c oxidase activities and respiratory control ratio in liver mitochondria were compared in young (3-4 month of age) and old (20 month of age or older) rats to study the effect of aging on mitochondria. In the old group, respiratory control ratio (RCR) was reduced by 16%. Malate dehydrogenase activity was also decreased by 42%. Cytochrome c oxidase activity showed the 67% reduction. Present result suggests that the decrease of cytochrome c oxidase may have a direct role in aging.
